CHAPTER 14

Della was stretched out in the corner of the couch, playing a game on her phone while Moose kept her feet warm. Bryce was outside cleaning his Suburban out, taking advantage of the nice evening temperatures. A breeze came through the window, brushing along her face and hair. It made her look up and out the window, her thoughts wistful.

For a little while, she could forget about the mystery box, the man or other people who supposedly wanted her dead, and Bryce thinking Molly was suspicious. Thankfully, he hadn’t said anything more about it and she hoped that maybe he’d realized the error in his thinking.

The sound of an approaching car made her turn to see who was driving down the road. She expected it to be one of the distant neighbors on their way home, or maybe kids out driving on the rural roads to get away from their parents. So she was surprised when it was a sheriff’s truck, and it was slowing down to pull into her drive.

Della sat up and slipped her shoes on as she tucked her phone into her back pocket. Moose had started to make quiet barks, alerting her that someone familiar was outside.

“Want to go see Sheriff Metcalf?” she asked Moose as they both went to the door and headed out.

As she walked across the porch and down the steps, Sheriff Metcalf walked over to Bryce and began to talk to him. She frowned, wondering if something had happened. Usually he came to see her, not Bryce.

“Good evening,” she called out once she drew close enough.

“Good evening,” Jared said as he turned to look at her. His uniform looked brighter than usual, and she eyed it trying to decide if it was new. “I have to admit I was surprised to get your message,” he said to Bryce as he turned to face him. “I actually needed to talk to you, too.”

Bryce went to his passenger door and pulled it open only to grab some window cleaning wipes and started to clean his windows methodically. “Does it have to do with those logs I showed you?” he asked.

Della was a little irritated that it seemed like she was being ignored, but she kept quiet because she was intrigued. “What logs?” she asked.

“Remember how I told you I was going to look through Seth’s computer and files?” Bryce asked. When she nodded, he said, “I found a few things that I thought might be meaningful. But since I’m not a local, I wasn’t entirely sure, so I passed them on to the sheriff here to see if he could glean anything from them.”

Della nodded and turned to Jared. “And did you?”

“Maybe,” he said carefully. “It’s still not solid proof, but I think I might know a little about what was going on.” Jared sighed and crossed his arms against his chest, then he rubbed his hand across his brow. Finally, he turned off his radio on his hip and looked at the ground.
